Battery Rebate Program
Cheaper Home Batteries Program – Expanded from 1 May 2026
The Australian Government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program has been expanded to help more Australians reduce energy costs and increase energy independence through battery storage.
Originally launched in July 2025 as a $2.3 billion initiative, the program has now been expanded to an estimated $7.2 billion over the next 4 years, with the goal of supporting more than 2 million battery installations by 2030 and delivering approximately 40 gigawatt hours of additional storage capacity across Australia.
Eligible households, small businesses, and community facilities can access significant upfront discounts on eligible battery systems through the expanded Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES).
Eligibility Criteria
Installation Date
Battery systems installed from 1 July 2025 may be eligible for incentives under the program.
Approved Products
Only batteries listed on the Clean Energy Council (CEC) approved products list are eligible.
System Size
Eligible battery systems are supported up to 100kWh.
Additional Incentives May Apply
The Cheaper Home Batteries Program is designed to work alongside eligible Commonwealth, state, and territory battery incentive schemes.
Depending on your location and circumstances, you may be eligible for support under multiple programs.
Key Benefits
Significant Savings
Eligible battery systems can receive substantial upfront discounts, helping reduce the overall cost of installation.
Greater Energy Independence
Store excess solar energy generated during the day and use it when electricity prices are higher or when the sun isn’t shining.
Positive Environmental Impact
Reduce your carbon footprint and make better use of clean, renewable energy.
Expanded Battery Support
Battery systems up to 100kWh remain eligible under the program.
Program Changes from 1 May 2026
The Australian Government introduced changes to ensure the program remains sustainable and continues to deliver meaningful savings as battery prices change over time.
Updated STC Discount Structure
The discount is delivered through the creation of Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs).
From 1 May 2026:
● The STC Factor declines every 6 months
● The STC Factor now reduces at a faster rate over time
● The discount received depends on the installation date and battery size
New Battery Capacity Tiers
The level of support now changes depending on the battery system size:
● 0–14kWh: STC Factor applied at 100%
● Above 14kWh up to 28kWh: STC Factor applied at 60%
● Above 28kWh up to 50kWh: STC Factor applied at 15%
These changes are designed to maintain meaningful support across a range of battery sizes while aligning with falling battery costs.
